The Skill Centers of America On-The-Job Retail Program offers eligible individuals
who are physically challenged and economically disadvantaged, the opportunity for
immediate employment, in addition to learning skills that will benefit them for many
years.
For a person who may have a physical disability, or a learning disability, a job could
be the hardest thing to find. Doors have often remained closed to the physically challenged,
although with the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, progress has taken a step
forward. However, SCOA was a forerunner to any legislative action, by beginning the Retail
Training Program over twelve years ago. SCOA opened many doors for those who are physically
challenged by offering them the opportunity to learn skills that are marketable throughout this
area and across the country. The Retail and Customer Service Industries have a long history of
providing steady and increasing employment.
In SCOA's on-the-job retail training program, eligible students gain skills in retail sales,
customer service, cash handling, security and theft control, in addition to an introduction
to computers, and some personal development classes. When needed, English and Math reviews
are also included. At the same time, the students are learning discipline and good work habits.
Each trainee works a specified shift, and receives a paycheck twice a month, just as a regular employee.
Working with social service agencies, such as Project H.I.R.E.D., Partnerships with Industry,
The Epilepsy Society, The Access Center, and private rehabilitation agencies, SCOA is continuing
to blaze a trail to open doors for many who are physically challenged. Many of SCOA's current
trainees, in the retail program and other areas of the organization, are learning how to reach
beyond their limitations, and look toward their futures as self-sufficient, independent and vital
members of the community.
